Bus Spotting, Stamps and Coins: The Other Hobbies Pete Loves
By Pete the Trainman
People know me for trains, and fair enough, I do go on about them. But trains are not the only hobby that has followed me through life. I have always had a soft spot for bus spotting, stamps and coins too. They might seem like separate interests, but to me they all come from the same place. They are about noticing things, remembering places, and finding little stories hidden in ordinary objects.
Bus spotting has a rhythm a bit like railway watching. You learn routes, liveries, numbers and the character of certain vehicles. When I was younger, buses and trains were part of everyday life in a way that is hard to explain now. You did not just travel on them. You knew them. A certain bus could remind you of school, work, a Saturday trip, or a rainy wait with a paper bag of chips getting soggy in your hand.
Stamps are tiny history lessons. A stamp can show a monarch, a place, a celebration, a ship, a bird, or a design that tells you what a country wanted to say about itself. I like that. You can hold something no bigger than your thumb and still feel connected to a whole world of letters, journeys and people. It is quiet collecting, but it has a lovely calm to it.
Coins are the same. They pass through pockets, tills, purses, drawers and old jars. Some are worth money, but most are worth memory. I like the feel of older coins and the way designs change over time. A coin can take you back to a shop counter, a bus fare, or being sent out with a few pennies and told not to spend it all on sweets. I may or may not have ignored that advice once or twice.
Model railways fit beautifully beside these hobbies because they all reward patience. You do not need to rush. You can sort, clean, catalogue, compare, display, and share. You can enjoy a rare find, but you can also enjoy something ordinary because it means something to you. That is important. A hobby should not become a competition unless you enjoy competitions. It should give you a reason to smile.
That is why Pete's Railway Club welcomes more than trains. Railways are the heart of it, but the community can share coins, stamps, bus spots and other little treasures too. If you are proud of a layout, show it. If you found a lovely old coin, show that as well. Hobbies are better when they are shared with kind people who understand why a small thing can matter.
