Pete's Tip

Slow-Run a New Loco Before Showing Off

A new locomotive is exciting, and I know the temptation to send it flying round the layout straight away. Resist it for a few minutes. Run it slowly in both directions and watch how it behaves through points, curves and crossings.

Slow running shows you things speed hides. You can spot a wobble, a pickup issue, a tight curve or a coupling problem before it becomes a dramatic incident in front of guests. I have provided enough accidental comedy on my own layout without planning more.
